i borrowed cash from a friend they now tell me they have sold it on, can this be done

i borrowed money from a friend they say now they cant wait any longer for the money and that they have sold the debt on, can this be done and how do i find out who it has been sold to as they wont tell me? i am worried it has been sold to someone that will turn up to beat me up ?

Debt collection companies are regulated. I am sure they will be entirely professional in their dealings with you. It may well be possible to negotiate a large reduction in the debt as your former friend would have sold the debt at a discount.
It sounds a very strange thing to do.

There are companies that buy debts but they usually require evidence of the debt and a contract. You don't normally have paperwork with debts between friends.
