CCCS/Stepchange

CCCS or Consumer Credit Counselling Service to give it it's full name, today is known as StepChange. It's a popular UK debt charity which has been around since 1993 and provides valuable, free, impartial and confidential debt advice.

What's impresssive about StepChange is that they use an independent review service called ReviewCentre which is real people rating the service that Stepchange provides. In June 2013, their average rating was 4.9 out of 5 which says a lot about the quality of advice provided and the trust people place in them.

They maintain that because they've specialised in debt for such a long period of time clients of theirs can be sure that they’ll provide impartial debt advice and the right practical solution for each individual. A useful service is that where a repayment plan has been set up, they provide aftercare and support through dedicated, what they refer to as 'guidance teams', so you're not left to your own devices.

I started a DMP with CCCS last October and have been very pleased with the way my plan has been handled. The people there are very helpful and can usually give you advice on what to do. I feel a lot happier knowing my debt will be cleared quicker and some of the banks I deal with have frozen the interest until the debt is paid off. Others have lowered it which is making life a lot easier. I think CCCS are doing a really good job and they have helped me a lot. They are a well-respected charity and all the banks know of them and know that if you are with them you are really trying to pay off the debt. I did go to an organisation that were charging £30.00 a month and also the first 3 months payments went to them before they paid any creditors. I pulled out as I felt that all the money I paid should go to the creditors and the amount I was paying them was half the amount I am paying CCCS which would have taken twice as long even though they said it would only be 5-6 years!! It would have been more like 8 years but probably more than that. I would recommend them to anyone and I am really glad I went with them.

i have been with CCCS for a while now and have found them to be about as much use as a chocolate teapot, they are arrogant and totally in the banks pocket, they don't listen when you offer what you deem to be a reasonable amout to be repaid to the creditors,as previously stated by some one else they skin you to the bone with the repayments, then they pester you you with so called reviews to make sure you are paying these wealthy banks that got you in trouble in the first place, enough to satisfy there greedy masters, they threathen you with nonsense like you may pay interest if you don't cough up! i've consistantly paid interest from day one, don't be fooled by these people, no one is that honest!i'd give them no stars if it where possible.

I would just like to correct the bottom statement that the CCCS were set up by banks. This is incorrect. The charity was fouded by two men - Vic Ware and Malcolm Hurlston after seing similar organisations helping people in America. It was certainly supported by some financial institutions, such as Barclays as well as the government run Registry Trust and the credit reference agency Experian but it has always worked, and continues to work, completely independently of the banks. It is also not true, in response to another review on herre, that they work for the banks. The aim of the CCCS is to provide impartial and compassionate support and assistance primarily to the customer although the banks and creditors will be treated fairly with their legal rights taken into account - i.e if someone can afford to pay to their debts they will be advised to do so. If they can't other realistic options will be advised instead. I have never had any issues with the CCCS or the way they work and since they are a charity and offer all of this for free, I believe credit should be given where credit is due.

I was at breaking point, ashamed, and embarrassed to finally admit I was in financial trouble. I was advised to speak to the CCCS by an advisor at my local bank . I was scared to make the initial phone call and ashamed of what they would have thought of me, but I need not of worried. The advisors at the CCCS are so friendly, understanding, non judgemental, to sum it up they where just ordinary people there to help get me on the right road and manage my life again. Today many years later I am finally dept free, I don’t owe a single person a single penny and I cant Stop smiling. Thank you to the wonderful people at the CCCS who have helped me get were I am today. Your help and support and all the financial advice over the last 7 years has been incredibly but for me even more importantly, your understanding, kindness and compassion have been so precious. At my very lowest you helped make me feel there was a way forward and there would be light at the end of a very dark tunnel and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. To anyone struggling to make ends meet please don’t ignore things get some advice from the CCCS they are there to help you and you will feel much better believe me.

Thank god for the CCCS. Is all I can say. I foolishly left it too long before contacting them about a £16k debt. The week after my initial contact I was offered a phone appointment (which cost me nothing as they called me). After the call I felt as if a huge weight had been lifted of my shoulders and I slept soundly that night for the first time in a very long time. I had another consultation a week later and days later received my welcome pack. My first payment to my creditors starts this month and it makes me happy that I don't have to dogde calls anymore. It's also a relief that the CCCS can communicate by email so they don't have to write to me. I would recommend them to anyone as their staff are very sympathetic and not judgemental. There is also no extra cost to you to use them unlike some companies who want to charge you - adding to your debt. I now have a budget planner for the first time ever in my working life and the good thing also is that if I know in advance of a payment not accounted for in my budget like car service, the CCCS can make an adjustment to reflect this so I'm not left struggling that month.

After struggling with a debt for so long and the worry it brings (sometimes without you realising) I made the phone call to the cccs. I can say without any doubt this was the best phone call I ever made. They have set up a debt management plan for myself and now I can enjoy the last part of my 20's whilst paying off my debt. THANK YOU CCCS. Plus at no point did I feel belittled by having this debt by them and it was refreshing to pick the phone up to people who know what they are talking about. PLEASE IF YOU ARE WORRIED RING THEM!!!

I joined stepchange about 10 months ago and I am self employed and have a lot of debt due to solicitor fees for a civil court case in the family courts. The case went on for over 4 years and I was the respondent so had no choice. I worked 24/7 running a business around 3 young kids 2 of whom are autistic. Just got to the point when I broke and thought this isn't healthy for me and my family(my husband also works full time). was advised to go on a debt management plan. I hadn't missed one debt payment until I got involved with stepchange. They aren't great at helping you and you have to get quite forceful to get them to sort stuff out for you. I have been paying 380 pounds per month for ages and some of my debts have increased and not decreased. The other thing I don't like is that they count all your tax credits as income, even though we get the disability element for our children. Originally I was going to do an IVA but the woman I spoke to was really rude and nasty and it put me right off. They basically collect everyone's money then get thousands in interest before its paid to creditors. They post things on Facebook and twitter about cards thanking them but they haven't helped us much at all. I am still in the same amount of debt and my credit rating is shot!

I think the issue with Stepchange is they have a one size fits all policy with DMP's. Not everyones circumstance fits the way in which Stepchange carries out their DMP's. For instance, a guy previously said that he had a creditor who wished to be paid on a certain day of the month-as Stepchange pay creditors on a certain day at the end of the month, this causes problems and as such the guy had penalties-surely, being flexible with letting the guy pay that company outside the DMP is more beneficial than letting him rack up more debts. I too am with StepChange and I’m frustrated with their lack of flexibility with the DMP. What also frustrates me is the lack of humanity and the sometimes callous tone to the advisors when you don’t understand something that perhaps is second nature to them. The whole review process is also extremely stressful-I have only been with Stepchange for a few months and as I mentioned I would get money from a trial I was in, when I was interviewed, they set a review date for when I said I would get the money. When I called them to explained I cant afford to pay more based on getting this money alone, the advisor wasn’t happy excepting this and advised I would (amongst other things) look at increasing my DMP to reflect the fact I had more money (I wished to save that money for Christmas) I explained that I also had other costs as we were coming into Christmas that I hadn’t mentioned at my interview-I was told I should of planned for this knowing Christmas was in December-I have only been with them a few months and this isn’t always a clear cut at the time to start planning for Christmas when I was trying to sort out my debts. I just feel with the way they speak to you and the fact they pride themselves on a charity set up, they really need to work on the way they interact with their clients. I don’t feel relaxed when I speak to them and I don’t like the way I’m made to feel like a child being disciplined for being in debt-I except I am in debt but please don’t patronise me if I don’t understand or except their way of doing things. I feel they need to work on this and work on being more flexible with their DMP methods. The one size fits all method with Stepchange hasn’t worked for me and I am moving to another provider found on the review centre. I have noticed this issue with the way they speak to their clients has come up in many reviews, not just on here. Maybe something to work on Stepchange-feedback is a positive way to improve.
